The
Realism of John Duns Scot and Charles Sanders Peirce
Prof. Dr. Carlos Arthur Ribeiro do Nascimento
Department of Philosophy - Pontifical Catholic University of São
Paulo, Brazil
[Abstract]
The Avicenian
distinction between essence considered in itself and its states, of singularity
in the individual and isolation in the universal, allowed both Thomas Aquinas
and John Duns Scot to formulate their realistic conceptions as regards the
discussion on the statute of universals. Charles Sanders Peirce, according
to his own declarations, links himself to the Scotist realism. We intend
to explain this linkage through Peirce's indications in his well-known review
of Alexander Campbell Fraser's edition of the Works of George Berkeley.
